The Media Advocacy Coalition calls on Ministry of Justice to end discrimination against journalists
Today, 11 November 2021, government-critical media representatives were not invited to the briefing planned by the Georgian Minister of Justice, and only some part of the media were able to attend. The Coalition is aware that some online media also did not receive the announcement of the briefing.
According to TV Pirveli [1], the TV representatives were allowed in only towards the end of the meeting, but they were not given the opportunity to ask questions about the transfer of the third president, Mikheil Saakashvili, to Gldani prison.
We believe that such a discriminatory approach violates the right of media representatives to carry out their professional duty to receive and disseminate information on important issues. At the same time, it limits the public’s ability to follow ongoing trials from different sources.
We call on the Georgian Ministry of Justice to end its discriminatory approach to the media and to allow all journalists equal access to information.
