MAC Condemns Attack on Journalist and Activist Eliso Janashia

24 December 2024

The Media Advocacy Coalition strongly condemns the violent assault on activist and journalist Eliso Janashia in Poti. This incident highlights the alarming trend of violence against individuals with critical views who advocate for independent and free speech.

Eliso Janashia has stated that the attack is directly connected to her criticisms of the “Georgian Dream” party. Video footage captures the violent act as it transpired.

This incident is not isolated; it is part of a broader pattern of intimidation and repression by “Georgian Dream” against protesters, journalists, and activists. The prevailing impunity for perpetrators fosters an environment conducive to further violence.

The coalition stands in full solidarity with Eliso Janashia and all journalists who must carry out their professional duties in life-threatening circumstances. Free media is a cornerstone of democracy, and efforts to silence independent voices through violent means must be met with accountability.

Since November 28, there have been over 90 recorded instances of attacks on journalists, obstruction of their work, and damage to their equipment. See the updated list here.
