An analysis by “Rights Georgia” focuses on the trends of anti-Western and anti-European propaganda in Georgia. This document explores the disinformation narratives aimed at the European Union and examines their dissemination throughout 2022.
The study indicates that Russia employs a strategy to extend its influence in Georgia through corruption, propaganda, and the engagement of local actors. Notably, the number of anti-Western messages tripled from 2016 to 2020.
The war in Ukraine and Georgia’s pursuit of European Union membership significantly shaped the propaganda landscape in 2022. A predominant narrative suggested that the West was attempting to draw Georgia into the conflict. The ruling party, far-right groups, and their affiliated media outlets were actively involved in propagating this idea.
The report anticipates that anti-Western propaganda will persist in 2023, especially in the context of necessary reforms for Georgia to attain EU candidate status.
