The process of selecting candidates for the Board of Trustees of the Public Broadcaster is at an impasse because the Parliament cannot reach a consensus on the proposed candidates from the Ombudsperson, the parliamentary minority and majority.
The Georgian Law on Broadcasting stipulates that political groups must reach an agreement. We recommend that the minority in Parliament make every effort to gain support for their chosen candidate, while the majority should be able to agree to the nominees put forth by the Ombudsperson and the opposition.
While there may be differences in the experience, reputation and vision of the candidates, it is vital that the Public Broadcaster’s Board of Trustees includes a range of perspectives to ensure that decisions are made in the best interests of the broadcaster through professional debate.
