The Media Advocacy Coalition reacts to the injury of TV Kavkasia cameraman

29 November 2021

Today, 29 November 2021, according to reports, Niko Kokaia, TV Kavkasia cameraman, lost consciousness while filming the rally held at the Tbilisi City Court in connection with the trial of Mikheil Saakashvili. According to him, he fell ill after pepper spray was allegedly poured into his eyes. He is now feeling better after receiving medical care.

Police allegedly used pepper spray during the rally outside the Tbilisi City Court. According to witnesses, the police did not warn them before using special means.

Unfortunately, the representatives of the Ministry of Interior did not properly fulfil their role this time, with the police to this day failing to ensure the media safety during the coverage of demonstrations.

The Media Advocacy Coalition calls on the Ministry of Interior to take into account the high public interest in the trial and to provide adequate conditions for media representatives to carry out their professional duties freely, without endangering their health and violating their rights. At the same time, it is important to immediately start investigating the facts that have come to light and to take appropriate action.
