Votes for Georgian Dream from Abandoned Villages

03 November 2024

On November 2, 2024, TV Pirveli aired journalistic investigation into the electoral success of Georgian Dream in the Ninotsminda and Akhalkalaki districts, primarily populated by national minorities, where the ruling party secured 87% and 88% of the votes, according to the official results. To navigate the locals’ fear of speaking freely on camera, the journalist posed as a representative of the ruling party and inquired about the election process. TV Pirelli shows deserted villages, from where numerous locals had moved to Armenia years ago but were transported back in minivans to vote. Locals tell the stories how individuals cast multiple ballots on behalf of others, how their passports had been taken away as a result of persuasion or pressure from the local government. Several residents confirmed receiving GEL 100 or 150 for their votes.
