The Media Advocacy Coalition again condemns the violent and aggressive actions against independent media representatives at the Tbilisi City Court.
On October 1, as shared on social media by journalist Mindia Gabadze of the online publication “Publica,” the court’s bailiff head, Davit Matiashvili, threatened the journalist before a trial started and repeatedly tried to physically attack him.
On the same day, an employee of the court’s bailiff’s office confiscated the mobile phone of Natalie Jakhutashvili, a journalist for the TV channel “Formula,” and returned it damaged.
This is not the first time journalists have been attacked at the Tbilisi court. The court, controlled by the Georgian Dream party, has become a symbol of injustice and violence in the country.
The situation for the media in Georgia is extremely difficult. Prisoner of conscience Mzia Amaghlobeli is being persecuted for political reasons. Over the past year, there have been more than 400 recorded incidents targeting independent journalists. These acts of violence are carried out by the Georgian Dream government and its affiliates. Meanwhile, the authorities have responded with complete impunity, allowing these attacks to continue.
The Media Advocacy Coalition stands in full support with independent journalists and media organizations working under these dangerous conditions.
Public support, solidarity, and international attention are essential to protect free media and preserve democracy in Georgia.
