The state has a duty to protect journalists and stop threats

11 May 2022

Yesterday, on 10 May 2022, the presenter of TV Pirveli, Vika Bukia, published a correspondence in which the presenters of TV Pirveli are threatened with death. The threat is related to the professional activities of journalists.

The Media Advocacy Coalition believes that the state has an obligation to protect journalists and stop threats to their lives and freedom to work.

Attacks and intimidation of journalists and other media actors inevitably have a chilling effect on freedom of expression. This effect is all the greater when attacks and intimidation are accompanied by impunity for the perpetrators. In light of the above, the Coalition calls on the Special Investigation Service to protect the rights of journalists through prompt and effective investigations.
