Mzia Amaglobeli is a veteran Georgian journalist and founder of Gazeti Batumelebi, one of the country’s oldest independent media organizations. Since 2001, she has championed press freedom and nonpartisan journalism through online media outlets Batumelebi.ge and Netgazeti.ge.
In January 2025, amid a sweeping crackdown on independent media and civil society, she was jailed on politically motivated charges – becoming Georgia’s first female journalist recognized as a political prisoner. Her arrest was widely seen as an exemplary punishment and a signal of a new phase of media persecution aimed at silencing dissent.
Yet instead of becoming a symbol of fear, she became a symbol of resistance – uniting Georgia’s diverse and often polarized media community in unprecedented solidarity.
