MAC Statement Upon the Detention of TV Formula Journalist Vakho Sanaia

22 July 2026

Media Advocacy Coalition (MAC) condemns the repressive decision made against TV Formula journalist Vakho Sanaia.

On July 22, Judge Zviad Tsekvava sentenced journalist Vakho Sanaia to 14 days of imprisonment for a post written on a social network. This decision was preceded by a 6,000 GEL fine imposed on the journalist for the same reason.

Under the rule of “Georgian Dream,” the judiciary, like other state agencies, is actively used as a mechanism for enforcing repressive laws and restricting free speech. The arrest of a journalist for expressing a position on a social network confirms once again that independent media and freedom of expression in the country are under direct attack and systemic pressure.

MAC expresses solidarity with Vakho Sanaia and every journalist who continues carrying out their professional duties in a repressive environment.
