MAC demands the immediate release of the Director of Batumelebi/Netgazeti

12 January 2025

Media Advocacy Coalition responds to the illegal detention of Mzia Amaghlobeli, director of the leading publication “Batumelebi,” and demands her immediate release.

It is particularly concerning that the detention of a media representative occurred during a peaceful protest, where the police also illegally detained dozens of citizens. It should be noted that the grounds for detention – placing the writing “Georgia Strikes” on a wall – represents a legitimate form of freedom of expression.

The Coalition notes that the “Georgian Dream” continues to pressure media representatives and restrict their activities. It is especially alarming that while there is no investigation into those who committed violence against protest participants, the police are illegally detaining peaceful protesters and media representatives.

Media Advocacy Coalition demands the immediate release of Mzia Amaghlobeli, as well as other illegally detained persons and political prisoners held in pre-trial detention.

Note: Although Mzia Amaghlobeli was initially released at the time this statement was issued, she was arrested again shortly thereafter.
